What is an investor visa for Australia?

  • Australia investor visa programs offer business owners and investors a pathway to Australian residency through running a business or making an investment.
  • Your family can be included in the application and can live, study, and work in Australia for the life of the visa.
  • The typical pathway: subclass 188 provisional visa → subclass 888 permanent residence → Australian citizenship once eligible.
  • Each stream suits a different combination of capital, management experience, and residency goals.

There are 3 main streams, each suited to different goals, financial capacity, and investment approaches. The typical pathway: subclass 188 provisional visa → subclass 888 permanent residence (after at least 3 years) → Australian citizenship.

  • Under 55, with a score of at least 65 on the Australian points test
  • A business owner or shareholder actively involved in management, with a successful business in your home country
  • Net business and personal assets of at least A$1.25 million
  • Nomination by an Australian state or territory government
Business requirements
  • An ownership interest of at least 30% in a business that you have managed directly for at least 3 years
  • Annual business turnover of at least A$750,000 in 2 of the last 4 fiscal years
Pathway to 888A permanent residence
  • Run a business in Australia with an ownership interest of at least 30%; invest from A$300,000 (varies by state)
  • The business has operated for at least 2 years, with turnover of A$300,000 in at least 1 year
  • Meet 2 of these 3: net business assets of at least A$300,000 · combined personal and business assets of at least A$600,000 · at least 2 full-time jobs created
  • At least 1 year of residence in Australia in the 3 years before applying
  • Either the main applicant or their spouse (as a 188A visa holder) can apply

  • The whole family (main applicant, spouse, and dependent children under 23) can live, work, and study in Australia for the 5-year visa term
  • Tuition-free public schooling for your children through high school

Hold the 188 visa for at least 3 years

Make the investment or run the business

  • 188A: operate a business in Australia for at least 2 continuous years; turnover of at least A$300,000 in the most recent 12 months; at least 1 year of residence in Australia in the 3 years before applying for the 888A
  • 188B: maintain the A$2.5 million investment until the 888B is granted; at least 2 years of residence in Australia in total
  • 188C: maintain the A$5 million investment; the main applicant spends at least 40 days a year in Australia, OR the accompanying spouse at least 180 days a year

Permanent residence

  • Meet the investment or business and residence requirements, and the whole family can apply for permanent residence (at the earliest after 3 years on the 188 visa)
  • Access to Medicare, education, and social security broadly on the same basis as Australian citizens, subject to eligibility rules (permanent residents cannot vote)
  • The travel facility on your permanent visa is renewed every 5 years

Australian citizenship

  • At least 4 years of lawful residence in Australia, including the most recent 12 months as a permanent resident (888 visa)
  • Total absences from Australia of no more than 12 months over the 4 years, and no more than 90 days in the final 12 months
  • Once you hold citizenship: full citizenship rights, and an Australian passport with visa-free or eVisa access to 187 destinations
