According to a Tuoi Tre article reporting on the difficult situation of Phan Thanh Binh, a needy student from the Vo Van Kiet high school in Phu Yen province, Vietnam, Mr. Tran Van Tinh, the IMM Group’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, has decided to help him get through this difficult stage of his life.
Worries of a needy student
IMM Group: An article by the teacher of class 12B has led to great emotion and feelings of sorrow for Phan Thanh Binh’s difficult living conditions. In order to get enough money to cure his father’s kidney failure, and to buy books and notebooks for his new school year, Binh has had to miss his classes, and instead pull up manioc bulbs for landowners and work for other people so that he can assist his mother. While his classmates are concentrating on their studies in their final school year, Binh has to struggle to earn his living every day.

During a test at the beginning of this school year, when his teacher asked to check his notebook, Binh was shy about bringing out a pile of paper which was bound together from his old unused notebook pages. Looking at the yellow pages colored with new ink, Binh’s teacher was badly affected. Money got from his extra jobs is used to help cure his father’s disease. Binh has to collect books, notebooks, and clothes from a lot of sources and reuse second-hand goods to save money. When he takes a brief break from work, he mends his old clothes so that he can wear them at school. Binh’s dream is to become a medical doctor so that he can cure his father’s disease. However, due to his frequently missing classes to get extra jobs from the beginning of this new school year may cause him to miss out on his dream in the future.
The IMM Group supports Binh to continue his schooling
Moved by Binh’s loyalty and ambition, Mr. Tran Van Tinh and Mr. Lim Chor Ghee, the IMM Group’s co-founder and high-ranking consultant, went to Phu Yen to encourage and support Binh and his family. On this visit, Mr. Tinh met Binh’s family and his teachers to hear stories about Binh and to share the difficulties which Binh has been through. Because Binh’s father had been taken to hospital in an emergency, Mr. Tinh was not able to meet his father, and therefore had to talk to only his mother. He shared many of his thoughts about the five things that human beings have to go through, which are birth, old age, sickness, death, and the non-permanence of life in order to console the family and help overcome their difficulties.

With regard to Phan Thanh Binh, the IMM Group has given him 20.000.000 VND to pay for his father’s hospital fees and to help him continue his schooling. After 11 school years of hardship, if Binh gives up his studies now, he will not have a bright future. Without knowledge and professional skills, it will be imposssible for Binh to change his family’s difficult living conditions. Although these funds may not be very large, Mr. Tinh believes that this money, as well as their comfort and encouragement, will probably help Binh to gain more energy to struggle in his life, not to drop out of school, and not to disappoint his family and teachers.
