Where is Grenada?

Grenada is an island nation in the Caribbean, made up of one main island and several smaller ones. Lying toward the southern edge of the hurricane belt, it is struck by major storms less often than many islands further north. Known as the “Spice Isle,” Grenada is famous for its nutmeg and many other prized spices.

Despite its modest size of about 344 km² and a population of more than 120,000, Grenada draws a steady stream of visitors each year with its unspoiled natural beauty and warm tropical climate. Its pristine beaches and diverse ecosystems have made it a favorite retreat for Western travelers. These natural assets have also attracted a number of luxury hotel brands offering world-class resort experiences, supporting the country’s economic growth and its tourism sector in particular.

Grenada is a former British colony. Since gaining independence in 1974, it has been a member of the Commonwealth, with a political and legal system based on the British parliamentary model and close ties to the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries. English is the main language. Grenada continues to receive considerable support from the UK, and its citizens enjoy visa-free travel to the United Kingdom.

In recent years, Grenada has drawn growing attention for its citizenship by investment program. Launched by the Government of Grenada in 2013 to attract foreign investment and support the island’s economic development, the program has seen applications rise strongly year after year. In 2023 alone, nearly 2,300 applications were filed, bringing more than EC$1.13 billion (approximately US$419 million) in investment into the country — an increase of more than 300% over 2022 and a record high for the program.

The Grenada citizenship by investment program is popular for its reasonable investment amount relative to the benefits it offers, a processing time of about 10–12 months, and no education, work experience, or language requirements for the applicant. Beyond a spouse and children, the parents and siblings of the applicant and/or the spouse may also be included in the same Grenada citizenship application, subject to eligibility conditions.

Investors can qualify through either of the following options:

  • A contribution to the Government of Grenada’s National Transformation Fund (NTF), starting at US$235,000; or
  • A minimum investment of US$270,000 in a government-approved resort real estate project, held for at least 5 years.

In return, as Grenadian citizens, the investor and eligible family members gain a range of benefits, including:

  • Visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to more than 140 destinations worldwide, including the United Kingdom and the 29 countries of the Schengen Area (such as Germany, Italy, France, and Finland). You can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and in the UK for up to 180 days. See which countries Grenada passport holders can visit visa-free here.
  • Eligibility to apply for a U.S. E-2 Treaty Investor visa after being domiciled in Grenada for a continuous period of at least 3 years, allowing you to live in the United States while developing and directing a qualifying U.S. business.
  • Access to education and healthcare in Grenada.
  • Grenada recognizes dual citizenship, so you do not need to renounce your current citizenship.
  • Tax efficiency for some investors: Grenada does not tax individuals on foreign-source income and levies no inheritance or gift tax.
