Canada is one of the world’s leading study destinations for international students. The top universities in Canada play a central role in the quality of the country’s education system and help draw students from around the world.
Canada’s education system is recognized internationally for its quality and is consistently ranked among the best in the world. Thanks to this combination of high-quality education, a safe living environment, open policies, and a multicultural society, Canada welcomed nearly 600,000 international students in 2022. Canada is also among the most popular English-speaking study destinations, alongside Australia and the United States. For permanent residents, public schooling is free through high school and university tuition is only half the international student rate, which leads many parents to consider Canadian business immigration for their families.
In this article, IMM Group profiles the top universities in Canada.

1. University of Toronto
Founded in 1827, the University of Toronto is one of Canada’s oldest universities and among the most prestigious in the world. It enrolls nearly 100,000 students (2022–2023 academic year), about 27% of whom are international students from 170 countries. Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, the university has extensive, modern facilities, including 42 libraries holding more than 12 million volumes and vast archival collections; its library system is the 3rd largest in North America. Together, these give students a well-resourced, high-quality learning environment.

The University of Toronto is a top choice for many international students: it is Canada’s largest university, has ranked first in Canada for many years, and placed 21st in the QS World University Rankings 2024. Average tuition for international students is about C$60,000 per year (approximately US$42,000).
The acceptance rate is about 43%. The university offers about 700 undergraduate programs and more than 200 master’s and doctoral programs. Its alumni include 2 governors general, 4 Canadian prime ministers, 14 Supreme Court justices, and many other leaders and Nobel laureates.
2. McGill University
McGill University is one of the world’s leading public universities and is often called the “Harvard of Canada.” Founded in 1821, McGill is based in Montreal, Quebec. Nearly 40,000 students are enrolled, and international students from more than 150 countries make up nearly 30% of the student body — the highest share of any research university in Canada.

McGill consistently ranks highly in international university rankings. In the QS World University Rankings 2024, McGill placed 31st in the world and first in Canada for medicine. Average tuition for international students ranges from about C$27,000 to C$65,000 per year (approximately US$19,000 to US$46,000).
McGill also has the highest average entering grades in Canada and the highest proportion of doctoral students of any Canadian research university. It is known for its 50 research centers and institutes and more than 400 undergraduate and graduate programs across many fields. Its graduates are highly sought after by employers: on average, 88% are employed within two years of graduation, rising to 95% for engineering graduates.
3. University of British Columbia (UBC)
The University of British Columbia is a global center for teaching, learning, and research and appears regularly among the world’s top universities. In the QS World University Rankings 2024, UBC placed 34th globally. Founded in 1908, it has two main campuses, in Vancouver and the Okanagan. UBC offers more than 200 undergraduate programs and nearly 300 graduate programs, spanning science and technology, social sciences, engineering, the arts, medicine, and business. Tuition varies by program and year of study, averaging C$45,000–C$62,000 per year (approximately US$32,000–US$44,000).

More than 70,000 students are currently enrolled at the University of British Columbia, about 25% of them international students from more than 160 countries, creating a multicultural learning environment. This diversity gives students opportunities to take part in social activities, cultural exchange, and international research projects.
UBC has modern facilities, including Canada’s second-largest research library, with more than 6 million books, articles, and research materials. Both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses offer online library access, so students can reach information anytime, anywhere. Canada’s national laboratory for particle physics (TRIUMF), home to the world’s largest cyclotron, is located on the 402-hectare Vancouver campus, alongside many specialized research centers in fields ranging from medicine and engineering to the arts and social sciences. UBC has also educated 3 Canadian prime ministers, including Justin Trudeau, who was prime minister when this article was first published.
4. University of Alberta
The University of Alberta is one of Canada’s top 5 universities and one of the world’s top 120 (QS World University Rankings 2024). Founded in 1908, its main campus is in Edmonton, the hub of Alberta’s fast-growing industries, which offers strong employment opportunities for students during their studies and after graduation. Alberta also offers a modern lifestyle, a reasonable cost of living, and the highest average wages in Canada.

The University of Alberta offers a diverse range of programs, with 200 undergraduate and 500 graduate programs, including some unique in Canada, such as paleontology and land reclamation. More than 40,000 students are enrolled across 5 campuses, 27% of them international students from 156 countries. Its alumni have achieved distinction in many fields, from a Nobel laureate in physics to an art director on the Oscar-winning team behind the blockbuster film Avatar.
5. University of Waterloo
Founded in 1957, the University of Waterloo is located in Waterloo, Ontario, and is renowned for producing some of the world’s top talent in computer science, mathematics, and engineering. The New York Times has described it as one of the world’s top technology schools. For the past 15 years, Waterloo has consistently been named Canada’s top comprehensive research university, with research funding of US$211 million. It is also home to Canada’s largest automation and robotics research facility and recently partnered with a nuclear safety agency on clean energy research.

Waterloo’s co-op program, which combines study with paid work, is widely regarded as Canada’s best and is the largest in North America. In 2021, its students completed some 23,500 work terms, and more than 7,000 employers worldwide actively recruit students from the program.
More than 42,000 students are currently enrolled, with international students making up 19% of undergraduates and 41% of graduate students. The university is known for its long list of successful alumni and former students across many fields, including Mike Lazaridis, co-founder of BlackBerry, and “math prodigy” Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, which at the time of writing was the world’s 2nd-largest blockchain platform by market capitalization.
With many universities of proven, globally recognized quality, Canada offers students wide opportunities to study and develop their abilities in an internationally benchmarked environment. Compared with the United States, Canada offers lower tuition, a simpler application process, and more pathways to long-term residence after graduation. This partly explains why a growing number of investors around the world are choosing Canadian universities for their children. Beyond a well-rounded education, Canada’s safe, high-quality living environment, comprehensive social welfare system, prosperous economy, and well-established immigration programs make it an attractive choice for families looking to settle and build a sustainable future together.
